Book: One of Us Is Lying
Author: Karen M. McManus
Page Count: 368 pages
Age Rating: young adult (12+)
Star Review: 4.5/5
Summary: On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, THE BRAIN, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, THE BEAUTY, is the picture-perfect Homecoming princess.
Nate, THE CRIMINAL, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, THE ATHLETE, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, THE OUTCAST, is the creator of Bayview High's notorious gossip app.
Only, Simon never made it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon's dead. And according to the investigators, his death wasn't an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he'd planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they perfect patsies for a killer who's still on the loose?
This book was definitely a wild ride!! There were so many twists and turns, I never knew what to expect and the ending was completely unexpected. I don't read that much mystery, especially murder mystery but this book has inspired me to take on more. And Karen M. McManus is an incredible writer, so I will be checking out more of her books.
Now to the story itself. I was very fond of each of the main characters and spent a lot of the book hoping it wasn't my favorite MC who killed Simon. We learned a lot about each character and it made me really wonder who did it because we ended up with tons of proof for and against each character. There were a few characters I wish we got more of, such as TJ and Kris and I really wish we learned a bit more about Janae. But I do think McManus did a good job keeping the true identity of the killer under wraps.
In my opinion, Bronwyn and Nate got a bit too much attention. I was most interested in Cooper (though my friend has pointed out Kris, who's on like three pages does more for the plot than Cooper) and Addy for a lot of the time but Bronwyn and Nate got chapter after chapter, boring me at times. Nate was interesting to me at first, but eventually we learned everything there is too learn and his chapters spent a lot of time reinstating facts we had already learned.
I was happy that we did get two gay characters in this book. It's always nice to see a little bit of representation and the relationship between Kris and one of our MCs was very sweet. I may be requesting a novel of their relationship in the near future because to be completely and totally honest, I was hoping for more of them!
But overall, this was a really impressive novel, especially as McManus's debut and I will be checking out more of her books. I can't wait to see what she writes next!!
Would I recommend? Of course!!!
