Summary: Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard, Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to wisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain, he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.
Memorable Quote: "It does not do good to leave a dragon out of your calculations if you live near him."
This is a book I've been meaning to read for a while now, even though I've never read Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. I am hoping to read it sometime soon when my huge pile of to read books gets slightly shorter, though. But until then, here's my review on The Hobbit until then.
This was definitely a good book. It's a fantasy classic and I haven't read too many classics, though I have been meaning to read more. The book was rather well-written, of course. I love Tolkien's writing style in the way it feels as if the narrator is telling a story to the reader. I love it when books are written like that. I also love his large vocabulary because with all the modern YA books I've been reading, the vocabulary tends to stay the same. It's nice to have a bit of a variety with classics if I'm being honest.
The characters in the book were very interesting and I really enjoyed watching them all grow and change throughout the novel, especially Bilbo. The cast of characters was rather large though and I don't believe there were any female characters if I think about it. But other than that, the characters were very elaborate and interesting, which I always appreciate in a novel. I love reading books where the characters feel real and though this book was high fantasy with no reality to it at all, I really felt as if the characters could be real people.
Finally, the plot. It was a very set plot, which has always been something that bored me. I tend to dislike it when the plot has a way you know it's going for sure. There were definitely some scenes that were predictable and were quite boring to me since I knew exactly where they'd be heading. And some scenes felt rushed as if they were forced in to make the book go, which I didn't like very much. Finally, there's the ending which I really didn't like. It ended suddenly, in the middle of a conversation which I really didn't appreciate since it didn't feel like an ending. I turned the final page looking for more and didn't get that which was definitely frusterating.
Would I reccomend? Definitely, for fans of action-packed high fantasy!!
